Batson Associates Celebrates Michael Nelon’s 30-Years of Healthcare Design Excellence
Greenville, SC — Batson Associates is proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone - Senior Architect, Michael Nelon, marks his 30th year with the firm. Since joining Batson Associates in 1995, Michael has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s culture, growth, and commitment to excellence in healthcare design.
Michael’s journey began with a leap of faith—leaving a less-than-ideal work environment at the recommendation of a former colleague. What he discovered at Batson Associates has kept him engaged for three decades.
“The work, the people, and the family atmosphere,” Michael explains. “It’s never felt like I was just a number. We’ve been through a lot together, and we genuinely care for one another.”
Coinciding with leaving one millennium and entering another, Michael’s journey with Batson Associates entails exemplary nuance and zeitgeists. From hand-drawing blueprints and blueprint reproductions to pioneering AutoCAD in the office to current technology, Michael has witnessed—and helped lead—the evolution of architectural design within the Greenville firm all while staying rooted in thoughtful human-centered design.
Healthcare architecture has long been Michael’s passion saying, “You’re designing spaces that truly serve people.”
Michael finds deep meaning in creating spaces that serve people during life’s most critical moments. One of his proudest projects is the Hospice House of Greenville, a space he describes as “a comfortable environment for people entering the final stage of life—a difficult time that is made a little more peaceful.”
Beyond design, Michael’s legacy is also defined by his mentorship and leadership. He encourages emerging architects to “be true to yourself, listen to others, and always be proud of what you create.” His approach is rooted in empathy, humility, and deep respect for both clients and colleagues.
Reflecting on memorable moments, from the birth of his children to witnessing a patient with cancer find solace in a serenity garden he designed – Michael remains as passionate as ever.
“That’s what it’s all about,” he shares. “Creating spaces that matter.”
Outside the office, Michael finds balance through gardening, beekeeping, and quality time with family. At Batson Associates, his impact is felt across both projects and people.
